Where The Mangroves Grow
Photography and Virtual Reality Installation
2024–2025 | MAC – Museum of Contemporary Art San Juan, Puerto Rico
By Llaima Suwani

Description:

Exploring themes of memory, identity, and ecological resilience, Llaima Suwani’s installation marks 10 years of MAC en el Barrio. She reimagines a past virtual reality piece with large-format photography of a neglected urban wetland—now a symbol of community activism and environmental renewal in the heart of the city.

Expedition to My Inner Volcano (In Progress)
Chile, 2025
Directed by Llaima Suwani

Description:

An exploration into the meaning behind a volcanic name emerges through memory, mysticism, and ancestral stories. Set against Chile’s dramatic volcanic landscapes, the film reveals identity, nature, and spiritual connection in fragmented, poetic pieces.

The Self Portrait series brings together individuals with shared experiences. Drawing on over a decade of community work, Llaima created a 13-step methodology. Collaborating with different crews, she has produced over 80 self-portrait short films that celebrate identity, boost self-esteem, and inspire authentic self-expression.

It all starts with a story.

Often it begins with curiosity—a question, a moment, or a desire to understand the world more deeply. Each story is an opportunity, a chance to explore, learn, and connect in ways we never expected.

Filmmaking has taken me across borders and into lives that have expanded my sense of empathy and perspective. Traveling the world with a camera has allowed me to listen, to witness, and to gather stories that still sit with me today.

Now based in Puerto Rico, I’m focused on building a body of work that reflects both where I’ve been and where I’m going—stories rooted in place, shaped by community, and driven by a deeper search for meaning.

This isn’t about arrival. It’s about the ongoing process of creating, questioning, and beginning again.
